this ain't thin, man

weird, this is my first Powell and Loy outside of the Thin Man series and I thought it proves they're both tremendous actors! I always liked the chemistry between Nick & Nora (goes without saying) but there was rarely any real tension between them as a married couple - they were perfect together, the dream marriage. SO this movie shows him as kind of goofy and her as kind of hard-to-please (is that the best way to get at what I'm saying?), not that they deviated from their successful formulas entirely, just enough to make the whole premise believable... well done! I'm looking forward to examining other characters to see just how differently they play against each other at other times.

I wonder why they never dated? They were so great together.

reply

They should have dated or married. They were good together unless that chemistry is just all onscreen and it disappeared off.

Cecil: Now don't shout at me - I'm in jail.
Jeffrey: Well, that's all right; we don't need you.

Just because they had chemistry acting on-screen doesn't mean they did off-screen. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying they were enemies off-screen. They were good friends for decades from all accounts. He was also married to Diana Lewis from 1940 (before this film) until his dead in 1984. Before that, it seems like when he was single, she was married or vice versa.

Long a favorite of mine. Also be sure to see them in "I Love You Again, just as good as Love Crazy (or better) . BTW, I hated them (Loy and Powell) in Double Wedding.

reply

I didn't care for them much in Double Wedding either. Powell's character was ok (maybe a bit too obnoxious) but Loy's character was so shrewy. Still a good movie though.
