Hit That Mother in the Face With the Pie!

Powell should have done that as soon as his mother-in-law invited herself to their anniversary dinner.

I did enjoy when he pushed her into the pool!

Me too! I had to replay it over and over.

Florence Bates (Mrs. Cooper) earned my respect for doing that pool "stunt" herself and not using a body double or something.

After he slapped Ward Willoughby a couple of times I kept hoping that he was going to slap that mother-in-law. Something really bad should have happened to her. Her meddling backfired in the end and was the cause of their reconciliation.

Outside of "Monster-in-law", "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and a few other comedies or dramas with interfering hags like this, Florence Bates has to be one of the funniest because of her passive/aggressive cheerfulness and her snide comments made to him with the most loving of expressions. Bates in real life was a kind woman, devoted to her husband and entire family, had multiple occupations outside of acting, and I'm sure delighted in playing the farcial elements of this character and the two-faced antics. By making her so ridiculously cheerful, it shows off how absurd she really is.
