Is there some sort of tradition known to filmgoers of the time on which the dual toasts at 14:10 are based ?

I get it that the two men name great military leaders and their triumphs while Stanwyck gets the punchline of sexual entendre

but is there some august custom in Coburn's choice of lead toast ?
