Title

What in the world does the title have to do with this film?

A woman with whom you have been closely associated has been murdered and you are the most likely suspect. An unsympathetic cop is slowly putting the pieces together, and they all seem to point toward you. You know that you are not guilty, but you seem to be the only one willing to consider that possibility.

Now, when you go to sleep, what do you think might happen?

Besides, it is a corking good title for a noir film.

I thought this was a horror film when I saw in on the guide.

Leading the blind squirrels of inquiry to the lost nuts of illumination.

The working title was "Another vehicle for Gable's gams". Then it was switched to what the cameramen said after days of shooting Victor Mature in spandex swimming trunks.

Actually, "I Wake Up Screaming" is the title of Steve Fisher's book. Good movie, good book.

reply

I agree it has nothing to do with the plot.

It might have to do with the theme music which sounds a lot like "Over the Rainbow" playing over and over.

This isn't a horror movie . . . . and it's made by 20th Century Fox, not RKO . . . . but the title sure sounded like a Val Lewton horror movie for RKO, whose marketing department thought that a movie's title is what drew audiences in, so they invented titles first, then told the producer (Val Lewton) to "come up with a story that fits this title".

I referenced it to the one scene where Frankie wakes up to see Lt Cornell staring at him.
