The Music

The music from this film is extraordinary.

Does anyone know the actual names of the songs sung by the choir throughout the film. Do recordings exist of this?

Thanks.

The song/hymn sung as the miners walk from the mine to their homes after work is called Cwm Rhondda, commonly sung in church (at least in mine) and variously titled "Bread of heaven", "Guide me O Thou Great Jehovah", or "God of Grace, God of Glory".

The song as Gwilym Morgan is pulled out of the coal pit (the final scene) is called Myfanwy. It is a famous Welsh song. Listen to it (and the other) on youtube.

Oh, I forgot to add the classic anthem Calon Lan (Pure Heart), sung during the wedding of Ivor Morgan (the eldest son) and Bronwyn.

bebop,

You've posted several times on this board about this. That's impressive knowledge of Welsh folk music for a person whose ID makes me think you'd know more about Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Are you as well versed in other music genre? Thanx for your enlightenment.

You're close. My ID though reflects my love for the 50s music (read Gene Vincent's classic) but tend to be quite eclectic in other genres as well. Plus, my spouse is of Welsh descent hence my familiarity with the music in the movie.

Thanx for the clarification bebop...a lula.

I've posted this as a goof some time ago but it seems to have vanished.
At the turn of the century (1899-1900-1901) the miners would not have sung the tune "Cwm Rhondda", as it was not composed until 1907 by John Hughes (1873-1932), the organist of Capel Rhondda in Hopkinstown, near Pontypridd for the inauguration of the chapel and its organ.

There are times where it is extremely overdramatic.......but the period in which the film is made is probably more to blame.

Yes, and it took me a LONG time to get the name of the music for the opening credits: Men of Harlech. It's a Welsh military tune, and if you see the movie "Zulu", it's the music for the ending credits. It's available on ITunes.
