PARD the dog

I read that Pard the dog was played by Bogart's own dog Zero. I don't understand how his pet dog was able to perform so many tricks in the film. Can someone please give me some background on how Bogie acquired the dog, how Zero was cast in the role of Pard, and what happened to Zero? I was quite taken with him in the film. Thanks.

best dog acting I have ever seen.

Pard was great, emoting and tricks-wise. Just Wikipedia'd Bogie and it seems Bogie felt WB's was a bit on the stingy side, and its wardrobe department, in particular, was lacking, so he sometimes wore his own suits in films. I guess they wouldn't have been able to provide a dog of say, Asta's or Toto's caliber, so he brought along his own, and obviously well trained, doggie.

It was good, but the dog in Oliver Twist (1948) was the best. A bit silly to discuss canine acting roles, but the two roles are actually very similar.

I personally liked the dog in HE WALKED BY NIGHT the best.

Fatty Arbuckle's dog, Luke, was a pretty amazing canine actor, too. Not taking anything away from Pard, though.

While I was surprised to find out that he was Bogart's own dog, at the same time I really wasn't. I mean, there was just something about the two of them on screen that felt... so genuine.

That said, the little guy sure did an impressive job in the film (he was just as good as his owner).

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

They really did have great chemistry. All three of them did, including Lupino. I was surprised to read that she didn't like acting with Bogie. They really did have great chemistry. I guess that's great acting for you.

Very good. But brick not hit back!
