Velma the ungrateful b****

henry Travers was the only decent guy in that family. . ."who IS this ROY?" Just because she hadn't fallen in love with Roy, somebody should have told her it was too late to become a flapper, dancing the night away. Look! & she's a cripple, too!! She was nicer before the surgery.

While I can understand why she didn't want to marry Bogie's character, she really did become unlikable at the end

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Ok.....So she was younger than Bogy. The way the talked about her boyfriend back home I expected some young good looking buck. What she had looked not much younger than Bogy and a major turd.

I too wondered why they basically turned her from a sweet kid to an instant turd herself. I guess it was so he'd appreciate Maria once he realized the other one wasn't what he thought

She wasn't really all that bad. She was just thrilled to be walking again. She insulted Bogie in the end, but it was only because he insulted her fiance first.

Sure the boyfriend was a tool, but love is blind and you can't really blame her for her outburst. For all we know, she could have regretted saying it after he left.

I agree she seemed very unlikable afterward, but like you say above, it was done on purpose to make Roy appreciate Marie.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

Also she owed him gratitude but not marriage. She naturally wanted to make up for lost time by dancing.

Yeah, apparently, when they fixed her foot, they also took out anything that made her likeable. While I do think there was some foreshadowing that she was a bit shallow and immature (no surprise there, considering her age), the transition to a young floozy was too abrupt.

Anyhoo, I was rooting for Roy to get with Marie, so I guess Velma needed to show her "true colors" (such as they were) to him so he'd see the light.

Her boyfriend really was a tool, though, huh?
