Silent Japanese Cinema

Just out of curiosity, for you Japanese cinephiles out there, when did Japan start making films? This is the earliest Japanese film I have heard of.

The first Japanese films were made in 1898. 1941 isn't even close. Search cinema of Japan on wikipedia. I was just at a screening of some 20s/30s Japanese silent films that had a live benshi narrator - it was really cool if you ever get opportunity to see one.

If I'm thinking of the right Chuushingura adaptation, this one isn't silent... But there have been so many that I don't know which ones I've seen!

I've seen the silent films collection you are speaking of and they are fantastic! One thing is they are very similar to sound movies and unlike the silents in the west. They are very modern and you mostly forget they are silent films.

You got to see some Japanese films with a benshei! OMG!

That is so great! I've only seen two or three Japanese silents. I heard about the benshei narrators a long time ago and I would LOVE to see that.

Janet! Donkeys!
