donald meek

character actor donald meek's talents (boat owner) were wasted in this film - he made several movies with R Russell and just about everyone else in hollywood... doesn't do much in this one.

Donald Meek's billing was commiserate with with talent and stature, but the role was not - perhaps genius lies on the cutting room floor.

He's literally caught in the middle when Rosalind Russell and Kay Francis get into a cat fight. Only a fool would turn down such a role. That alone was reason enough for him to accept his part in this movie and be happy about it. I would do that for free and he got paid for it!

From what I hear, under the studio system actors worked every day and sometimes that meant six days a week. A non-lead character actor like Meek was probably assigned to work on several projects at a time. Since most of the work was done on the studio lot it wouldn't have been hard to go from one movie set to another.

I've even heard of actors being asked to step into a smaller role because they happened to be on set visiting a friend. There are many possibilities but whatever the reason I don't think his talent was wasted. Actors have gotten awards for doing much less.
