What a waste

I think this was meant to be a comeback for her but it didn't work. According to the TCM commentary, the movie was released just before Pearl Harbor. Things became more serious, leaving audiences in too somber a mood for this type of movie.

Sunset Boulevard wasn't exactly a comeback either. It's the role by which she's most known but it was such a defining movie there weren't other great roles to follow.

I never liked Sunset Blvd. A creepy, ugly story not even told well. I've always wondered why it got so much acclaim. Mostly from women it seemed to me, so I have to think there was something ugly it appealed to in women.
