blue velvet

one of david lynch's possible inspirations for blue velvet, just may have been this version of stevenson's book.the relationship between frank and dorothy is very similar to hyde and ivy's,isabella rossellini is THE DAUGHTER OF INGRID BERGMAN,and hopper, however unwittingly, resembles the sharklike, tightfaced hyde from this movie.also there's the jeffery-sandy/frank-dorothy and jekyll-beatrice/hyde-ivy relationship dichcotomy, heightend by the distant implication of frank being jeffery's dark side, which would perfectly fit lynch's duality of man obsession.also, there's the watchful father figure in both, sandy's father in blue velvet, and beatrice's father in jekyll and hyde.also lynch tends to make films that are rethinkings of,or refrences to other films,i.e. wild at heart, with it's wizard of oz/elvis movie homages.i know that the frederic march version beat this film to the punch as far as plot structure, but for reasons that i've either explained already,or should be obvious, like the sadistic inslavement of ivy in this version being far more pronounced,i really think it was this version lynch drew on.after all, this version was much more freudian, and what movie is more freudian than blue velvet?

reply

Definitely.

And the setup of the psychotic male keeping a female performer emotionally hostage in a room. Those rooms.... SCARY.

you win the kewpie doll. for real. seriously, i've long thought that about this film. jekyll and beatrice/hyde and ivy's relationship is a serious influence on jeffery/sandy and frank/dorothy vallens.

glad we're not the only ones out there who noticed this!

Now I'm going to have to see this asap. It's generally considered inferior to the Frederic March version, but you've got my attention. I'll be watching closely.
