Edward Arnold as a good guy?

It seems that Edward Arnold usually played the bad guy in movies. He did quite well as good-guy Daniel Webster. Great actor.

For Frank Capra anyway. He looked like the classic socialist image of the rich capitalist. He played both good and bad in other films. But always men of power as far as I know.

He's as brilliant as Walter Huston in this superbly crafted Americana, and that's high praise indeed! The warmth he gives his Daniel Webster is never sappy and the fieriness he achieves never shrill...just about perfect.

Have you seen him in that Bob Hope film, Nothing But the Truth (1941)? There is a hilarious scene as Hope is getting dressed and gargling. Edward Arnold, Willie best and Leif Erickson are all in the bathroom with him when Hope lets loose with a spray of water and mouth wash towards Edward Arnold who is wearing a very fancy suit. Willie Best's eyes nearly pop out of his head, Erickson backs out of the shot as he begins to laugh and Edward Arnold tries to back away in horror as the geyser comes towards him! OMG. What a moment - unscripted, I bet.

ps - Arnold is always good!
