I haven't seen this film for ages - it used to be shown on brit tv in the 60s and 70s.
It being a 'flashback' movie, the air crash was part of the flashback backstory. He survived the crash but at a cost: head injuries sustained causing his subsequent amnesia. The scene with his wife at the end is the 'back to the present' moment, where -if I have it right- his reminiscences (the flashback story) help him overcome his amnesia. In a moment, he remembers his Concerto which eluded him at the beginning of the film. The ending is equivocal: but there is the suggestion that in turn he would remember his former life, his wife and his love for her.
