Uncle Joe

I read 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' recently and realised that 'Uncle' was a name often used for an older black man and not simply an affectionate term for an old family servant.
It was the language of the time and I don't believe it reflect badly on this film or it's writers. I also believe you should not judge old films on current standards, or at least make allowances for them. But it's interesting to be aware of these anachronisms and how things have changed.
