Underrated Operetta

It was always much better than the reviewers gave it credit for and perhaps Nelson Eddy's finest achievement as an actor. He was often described as "wooden" and so he might have seemed alongside the effusive Jeanette MacDonald but he too was unfairly treated by the critics. Stevens and Eddy are in great voice...there isn't a lot of shade in Stevens' debut performance, grinning and mugging perhaps when she should be be subtly evasive, but I like the film and it is curiously ignored by producers dismiss it as "dated" ad who cannot see the worth in reviving it for its music and surprisingly fresh comedy.
