A good movie

It is worth watching and is on TCM once in a while.

I agree.

I thought - although Martha Scott was fine and dandy in it - that others might have been good too, say Dorothy McGuire (sp??) ...

I never think about the future, it comes soon enough

Hollywood loved stories that took place over several decades. The passage of time and the sentimentality it produced was nector to the old fashioned movie moguls- and the audiences they made films for. People in those days were fascinated in how far we'd come and how we got there. That was still true when I was growing up, in the baby boom years. Most TV shows took place in the past and historical documentaries were a TV staple.

These days, it's all about what's happening now and who cares what went on before?

Schappel,

Very good post. I saw a similar post from you on the boards of another movie (of 4) which I spent a lovely rainy day watching. I don't remember which movie...I watched "How Green was my Valley"; "The Corn is Green"; and "I Remember Mama". All good movies I hope you'll agree.

Ciao, e buon auguri

Agreed.

The last 5 minutes were very powerful. Good directing by Garnett too.

It is a pretty good movie but I don't think Miss Bishop had a very good life. I say that because she never seemed to appreciate things in the moment. That's the worst thing, in my opinion, because you miss out on your own life as you live it and can only see how good you had it in retrospect.

She also kind of let things happen to her instead of guiding her own path. I do realize she lived in a different time; when women had fewer options, but many women managed to carve out a pretty good life for themselves even then. In life you may not get all the things you want but you can make the best of the options you do have.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
