It does stand out as one of the earliest depictions of a woman protagonist in a strong, serious (i.e. non-romantic) role.

The film is not garbage. The story is uplifting and there are no vulgar themes or language, no gratuitous sex or violence.

And it made you think about how you treat people which is ALWAYS a worthwhile thing to do.

It is a terrific movie.

There's only one thread because some people didn't have the luck to watch it on TCM. Wait till the DVD comes out!

I know i cried my eyes too, it's a wonderful movie about a subject which is not too nice and was shown in a great way! It's up there with Imitation of Life (1959) in my eyes.

I'm 27 years old but i do appreciate alot of movies that were made a few years before then....Alot of my favourites are classics as well as newer ones

I've seen a lot of good movies from the early days of Hollywood in which women were strong, smart, and independent. And, in regards to romance, that's how the movie started. I don't know the true story of Mrs. Gladney but I'd bet that was a fictionalized part of the story.

It's a good way to get and keep the viewer's attention. It's sad but some people wouldn't care enough about kids to find the movie interesting, entertaining, or worth watching without some romance. I feel that way about westerns and war movies. If there isn't a romance thrown in for good measure, I'd rather not watch.
