movies of the forties. . .

Generally speaking, and exceptions noted, thank you, movies of all genres seem to me to be inferior to that of the thirties.

My guess is that what had been successful became formulaic, and it shows in this film, even with the occasional fine sequence. The film is predictable, and blah, compared with it's thirties counterparts. There seems to be a freshness, a spontaneity, a sincerity about earlier films.

The "Tenement Symphony" is a forced attempt at grandeur, the plot is certainly the most contrived of the group to this point (it would get worse). The other musical numbers also seem slap-dash, a nod to the taste of the time, without belonging to what had been a tradition of operetta, which the earlier films reek of. Splendidly.

Please share your thoughts! Nicely.
