just wondering

Just bought the film on dvd on ebay. To me they made Captain Marvel look a bit weak, I mean a guy hits him with a chair and it knocks him backwards (yet the bullets bounce of him and the guillotine can't hurt him), he also tries to escape from hot laver. Captain Marvel is invunrable, after all he can go toe to toe with superman. His power seemed inconsistent in the film

"I'm going to marry Leonor Watling"

The chair shot was pretty inconsistent with his over all invulnerability, but I don't think his vulnerability to lava was out of place. Captain Marvel may be able to go toe to toe with Superman, but Superman wasn't ridiculously overpowered until much later. In 1938, it was stated that a missile could pierce Superman's flesh. By the 1970s, Superman was flying through the sun unharmed and blowing out stars as if they were candles. Personally, I prefer the old Superman.

So I guess they have given both of them more powers over the years! Didn't know that sups wasn't that powerful until later on, I thought he'd been like that always. Well u learn something everyday.

You think thats your husband, you think his going to come and save you don't you?

How about Cap getting electrocuted in chapter 6.

Yea that also should not have affected him either

In the beginning, Superman could not fly and was vulnerable to bursting artillery shells. Over time, this changed and he became more and more powerful. In the 70's, he was cut down a bit in the "Kryptonite Nevermore" story, which introduced a sand creature duplicate, with a portion of Superman's power. Unfortunately, it was back to business as usual within a year.

Captain Marvel was a bit more consistently handled, as he ony had a couple of writers, until the DC revival. However, Cap himself was rarely in jeopardy; rather, it was Billy Batson who found himself in danger (usually gagged so he couldn't say Shazam). I guess Republic felt that they needed Cap to be in jeopardy, once in a while, if only for variety.

You have to remember this serial went into production less than a year after the first Captain Marvel story appeared. And a year and a half after Superman's first appearance. Even the Superman radio show was a few months from premiering when this serial began shooting.

This is very, very early in the history of Superheroes.

Superman and Captain Marvel's powers are rarely consistent today. I think you need to cut the makers of "The Adventures of Captain Marvel" some slack for a similar lack of consistency when the character, and the very genre, was in its infancy.
