In reviews from Variety and TV Guide, it appears that the original movie was 108 minutes long. The DVD and time here at IMDb say 80 or 81 minutes. I certainly would like to see the entire film to see what was cut out for the DVD. Variety indicates that there was an outright brawk between Emilie and Hester which is certainly not in the shorter version! Could Columbia please release the full length version of this EXCELLENT film?
shareI have no idea what a brawk is so I'll use my best guess. The version I watched on TCM was 80 minutes and contained a scene where Emilie attempts to physically throw Hester out of the house.

At first I thought "brawk" must be some current slang a geezer such as yours truly wouldn't be up on. Then it hit me how the "k" key lives next door to the "l" on the keyboard. Must be a typo for brawl. Good show I figured this out before I went out and made some remark like, "What a brawk my neighbors had last night!" All the while thinking how up-to-date I sound!

oldblackandwhite.....Although my response is 6 mos. later to your post.....you are so funny! As soon as I saw 'brawk' I knew it was a typo, and was supposed to be 'brawl'! I didn't know there was an original print with more running time vs. what we are seeing now with less footage. It would be interesting to find out if the additional time is connected to the scene when Emilie confronts Hester about leaving.

necoleman (aka HillieBoliday)-----Thanks. Though I would like to have seen the "brawk", I have a feeling the 80-minute version is better than the 108min original. I generally liked the picture, but it seemed draggy at times even at only 80 minutes. I suspect the 108-minute version was a pre-release version, shown only in two or three selected theaters in small/medium size cities thought to represent a demographic cross-section (such as Peoria IL) to test the waters. Likely negative audience reaction to the length and other factors got it paired down before general release. Just guessing.
