Only 4 dollars charge to be driven from L.A. to San Francisco in private, chauffeured car! That's pretty amazing, especially when you realize that today, 4 dollars won't even buy you a gallon of gas.

The $4 then would be the equivalent of $69 now - still not a bad deal. Gas was about 18 cents a gallon, or less, then. The guy had 5 other people in the car, so he'd be making today's equivalent of $414 for the 400 mile trip, about double the IRS deduction of milage costs of 54 cents per mile.
Finally, I see that today Greyhound can get from L.A. to San Francisco for as low as $20 one way and Avis will rent you a car for $60 (plus cost of the gas, of course).
