This Film was a Pleasant Surprise

I've never been an Errol Flynn or Randolph Scott fan, so I have never purposely watched it. However, it came on TCM this morning while I was working near the television and I couldn't get up to change the channel.

What luck! Flynn was more than plausible in a Western and it's the best performance of Randolph Scott's career. It also features Humphrey Bogart in a very different role for him, along with fine supporting work from Alan Hale (The Skipper.) Miriam Hopkins was the only lead who I would have maybe considered casting differently.

This movie, unlike most Western films, keeps moving throughout and you don't have to suffer through long periods of boredom to get to the good parts. Good story, good direction, fantastic scenery. If you haven't seen Virginia City, be sure to watch for it on TCM. It'll be a pleasant surprise for you, too.

My DVR did not get the ending because it did not start on time on TCM. I missed what happens after Flynn tells the union army there is no gold. Would you please tell me how it ends?

Thank you!

PS: That was the skipper's dad, but they sure looked alike, didn't they?

Captain Bradford (Flynn) is court-martialed and sentenced to hang. He told the court that he had two obligations, one to the Union Army and one to see that the gold was used after the war to rebuild the South. Julia Hayne (Hopkins) goes to Washington and asks President Lincoln for a pardon, which is granted.

Much better than the more famous "Dodge City", (1939).

My the way the "Skipper" was Alan Hale Jr. His dad died of a heart attack in 1950, unfortunately. Great character actor fo the type that helped make the Golden Age of Hollywood what it was.
