Does anyone happen to know in which general time the film is supposed to start? I know that at one point, eight years has passed, and then at another, it is the year 1850. Did I just miss something, or do they not tell us the year in which the film starts?

I asked you not to tell me that!

No, there's no mention of when the film starts, but if, after 8 years, it's 1850, it's probably pretty safe to assume that it begins around 1842.
