Dazzling effects and visuals

This is a truly eye -popping film. The colours and sets are stunning - there is so much to dazzle the eye in every frame. So many visual highlights but the sultan's 'toy' collection is a personal favourite sequence. While today we are accustomed to getting worked up about the latest great achievement in CGI technology, one can only imagine how this film must have appeared to audiences back in 1940, with colour movies still a relative rarity. Those visuals must have leapt out of the screen. This is a magical movie.

Indeed! I love this film, it is all magic. Eastern as well as movie magic.

Always nice when I come across my own posts from the old IMDb days... does this happen to anyone else?

Everything I said above still stands by the way - I must have watched this film three or four more times since I posted this...

What do you think of the 1961 version with Steve Reeves?

reply

I haven’t seen it... is it worth a watch?

I have seen the 1924 Douglas Fairbanks version, which is terrific.

reply

It's a great looking film
