I guess the Code didn't allow them to show amphetamine usage?


Even though they depicted truckers combatting road fatigue and lack of sleep, it seemed they carefully avoided any comment on, or depiction of, amphetamine usage by any of the truckers. Do you think this was related to the Hayes Code?

Was it that widespread at that time? At any rate, they didn´t seem to use enough of it - we saw two crashes and heard of another one.

Funny, I had a similar thought concerning the Code, apparently, it didn't allow to have Ann Sheridan sleeping in the same bed than Raft, in the motel scene ... they didn't even try to 'suggest' it.

That's because it's a boardinghouse and they didn't. She slept in the chair; he even apologizes to her for taking her bed.
