Electric eye technology in 1938?

Wow! I had no idea! I was born in 1964, and when I was younger I believed that all these inventions and advancements had started at the earliest in the late Fifties. Amazing.

One obvious flaw with that type of electric eye system is that if you had a pet such as a dog or cat on the premises, then every time it walked through the beam, it would open/close the garage doors. Actually, any stray animal, such as a squirrel or raccoon, would do the trick.

A car thief might also find it useful.

Yeah, in France at least they seemed to find it pretty mesmerizing in 1958 - in TatiĀ“s Mon Oncle (or maybe it was just Hulot...)

"facts are stupid things" - Ronald Reagan

"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."

In his address to the 1988 Republican National Convention, Ronald Reagan introduced a section of his speech with the words:

"Before we came to Washington, Americans had just suffered the two worst back-to-back years of inflation in 60 years. Those are the facts, and as John Adams said, 'Facts are stubborn things.'"

This paragraph, and the following four paragraphs, finished with Adams' words. However, at the end of the third paragraph, Reagan made a verbal slip, which he immediately corrected. A transcript of the speech reads,

"Facts are stupid things -- stubborn things, should I say. [Laughter]."

However, despite its origin as a slip of the tongue, "Facts are stupid things" has taken on a life of its own in the world of quotations, among those who do not know... the facts.

My grandparents bought fancy new house in 1942. It had a device under the driveway that opened the garage doors when the car ran over it.
