Cukor vs. Rossellini

I just belatedly discovered this gem of a film, which has a great Anita Loos script and one of Joan Crawford's best performances.

But it also struck me that this is a comic view of the same phenomenon Roberto Rossellini addressed about a decade later in his film, Europe '51. Both have an upper-class wife experiencing a sudden religious urge, with many ensuing complications. The lead actress there, Ingrid Bergman, is also brilliant in the role. But in Rossellini's film, the religious urge is dead serious, arising out of a real domestic tragedy, and the urge is not a whim but a real life change.

These two would make for quite a double feature.
