I noticed that Lorre had teeth that were different than the ones he sported in The Maltese Falcon. There were spaces between all top front teeth. Were they fake? Did he have problems with his teeth? Anyone know?
In this movie, Peter Lorre is supposed to represent decadent England and their fall into the the abyss. His teeth were a physical embellishment of the hideous nature of English people at this time.
But he clearly wasn't playing an Englishman himself in this film, and he certainly could not have done so in any other movie either due to his very thick Eastern European accent. So why not just have cast either an English actor or at least an American actor of English decent in the role instead of an Eastern European actor with a heavy accent, if that's indeed what they were trying to put across or 'represent' in the film? I see absolutely no connection as far as this film attempting to comment on or to represent England and it's people. That's a pretty big stretch of a conclusion to come to while watching this film IMO.
