Plot Hole?

Kralik and Klara exchange numerous letters, presumably hand written. But is it credible that in the course of their work neither of them would have occasion to see the other's handwriting and realize they are correspondents?

reply

That's not what I would refer to as a plot hole.

"A plot hole, or plothole is a gap or inconsistency in a storyline that creates a paradox in the story that cannot be reconciled with any explanation."

One can come up with plenty of explanations for why each didn't discover the other through their handwriting. But - it is sort of an interesting thought.

I used to think I knew everything about the world. Now I just know that it's round.

They were clerks in a store, not office workers. They may not have had opportunities to see each others handwriting.

reply

But wouldn't they have to prepare sales slips on sales they made, describing the item(s) sold? And wouldn't he have access to her sales slips as the senior clerk?

reply

it's easy not to notice things like that though. seeing things is not the same as noticing them. at work they'd be focussed on the job so things like handwriting wouldn't be significant and they certainly wouldn't have expected to see the evidence so close by

Also, there can be a significant difference between the way you write when composing a careful, loving letter and the way you scribble notes about sales items and numbers.

Exactly what I wanted to say

Also in the old days handwriting was drilled into people. Probably there was a lot less variety in writing than there is now, not that anyone writes anything more than their signatures anymore anyway.
