Popkin

*** perhaps SPOILER ***

At the end, when Kralik talks to Novak, he says that she will be Mrs. Popkin.

He did just make that name up, didn't he?

Or is this really the alias he used in the letters? Personally, I don't think so.

He just did make up the name Popkin to test her reactions. Any ideas?

reply

The correspondents apparently never used names in their letters - just "Dear Friend."
imho, Kralik chose the name "Popkin" was about as unappealing as he could imagine.

reply

Do you have any clue as why the name "Popkin" would be "unappealing"?

reply

Well, it sounds sort of working class and it means like a dumpling, so maybe he just meant it as a contrast to all those kind lovely beautiful thoughts in their letters.

You've got me?! Who's got you?!

reply

Like a dumpling. That explains it. Thanks.

reply

Interesting that the obnoxious Robert de Niro character in Martin Scorsese's King of Comedy has the very similar name of Rupert Pupkin.
