Does Mr. Darcy have a first name?

...or does Elizabeth go through the rest of her life calling him "Mr. Darcy?"

reply

LOL, his first name is Fitzwilliam which was his mother's maiden name. I don't recall if this is mentioned in the film, I'll just have to watch it again to check!

You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope

I haven't seen this version, but in the book he signs the letter 'Fitzwilliam Darcy', and in both the 1995 (my favourite) and 2005 versions, *I think* it's seen pretty clearly in the letter.

Elizabeth! Hide the rum.

Thank you very much. It's been about thirty years since I read the novel and was too lazy to look it up.

It's always been Fitzwilliam Darcy ever since Jane Austen put the words down on paper.

With the exceptions of a few film adaptations (like "Bride and Prejudice" ~ William Darcy; and the Mormon version but not sure though), it's always been Darcy, in the novel and on-screen.

"I promise you, before I die I'll surely come to your doorstep"

Yes it is Fitzwilliam. I never would have thought I could grow reconciled to a name like that but Mr Dacry has done away with all my prejudices. In response to the first post though, I think she probably would have gone on calling him Mr Darcy, like Emma and Mr Knightly.

reply

I can imagine her calling him just "Darcy," but in my favorite sequel, "Pemberley Shades," she calls him "Fitz," which (to me at least) is part of her crusade to get him to lighten up.

Leave it to a woman to fall in love with a man, marry him, and immediately try to change him.

GAaa!!

I think you're right! After all, Mrs. Bennett calls Mr. Bennett, "Mr. Bennett," without a second thought!
