This film should be released on DVD

This was one of my favorite films as a child. Now, as an adult, I'd like to see it on DVD. The action sequences and the characterization keeps you rivited to your seat.

I've been waiting for a DVD release of Northwest Passage for a long, long time.

reply

I agree. Considering some of the crap movies that are on release, how about the companies issue some of the great classics, like this one.
How can we lobby to have such movies on DVD?

reply

No. Warner HV holds the rights and they will release this film soon. Just be patient - restoration takes time.

reply

I sure hope so!
With all the lousy films that are released onto DVD these days with such classics virtually ignored, one wonders what is on Hollywood's mind.
I sure do look forward to this DVD!!!

reply

How long have DVD's existed? That's how long I've been waiting for a DVD of this movie.

I first saw it on TV with my dad about 1960, and I've since watched it nearly every time it is broadcast. The only place one sees it now is on TCM, along with some of the other MGM classics, like "Green Dolphin Street".

reply

Ditto ! A classic!

I've got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me

reply

Very much so and if another comment seen is accurate in that Northwest passage is in restoration currently I guess a great many people will finally see one of the best films ever. I eagerly await a release.

reply

Absolutely and I hope it is true that it is in restoration. Too many classics, real gems, have been lost due to time and damage from the elements. Lets hope they are working hard to put this on DVD because all the classic films should be available in that form.

reply

I don't want to get you all excited, but on Amazon.com, they're listing a November 7, 2006 release of "Northwest Passage" as a 2 disc set!!! Please, PLEASE be true!! My VHS version is starting to show wear & tear!!

reply

GOOD CHOICE DONT GET EXCITED ITS 10 SHOWS FROM THE TV SERIES.WENT TO TIMELESS MEDIA TO CONFIRM THIS.WE WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT A WHILE LONGER

reply

Drat! Phooey! Shoot! Shucks! Rats! Gee whiz! Darn! Crap! @#$%!!!

reply

Well, the good news is it's available, but on VHS through Amazon. Ok, I'll settle for that, but the bad news is the cheapest version is used, $29.99. As much as I like this movie, I'm not paying $30 plus shipping for it. I wouldn't pay that much even for a DVD version. Frustrating!!!

reply

VHS version has vanished from UK amazon but last I saw was priced £40 ( GBP ). Hate to think what that is in USD but at £40 GBP I'd still rush to buy a true studio restoration.

In yesterday's Wall Street Journal, Joe Morgenstern mentioned this movie as one which should have been made available on DVD.

Northwest Passage is a great movie and is available on DVD. Rob

ANY INFO ON THE DVD

reply

There are several DVD copies available on iOffer, ranging from "Make Offer" to $20.00 plus shipping. From the information on one of the ads, NW Passage is apparently public domain.

I have been discussing this movie with my father in law for more than 20 years, he is getting up in age(82) and health id deteriating. I am 61 and also have it as one of my top 20 of all time, I would very much like to purchase a copy of northwest passage and sit with my father in law and see it before his time passes, please contact me at [email protected]. A response asap would be greatly appreciated.

reply

Where can I get it?

reply

As both a classic motion picture and an artistic film record of a significant event in North American history, it damned well better be availible on DVD, ASAP! I intend to demand that the local public library purchase it at the nearest opportunity.

Unbelievably, "Northwest Passage" has not been officially released on DVD yet. I've not seen or read anything, anywhere, on a possible (official) DVD release date.

Others have posted on this thread that the film has recently been (or is currently) "in restoration." Hard to believe, because the beautiful Technicolor print of the film regularly shown on the Turner Classic Movies channel is practically flawless. It looks like it could have been filmed yesterday.

The film ranks highly in balloting for a DVD release on TCM's website. Get over to the site, and cast a vote for this great film's release on DVD, and hopefully it (and "Northward, Ho!" the 10-minute black & white period documentary on the making of the film) will be released on DVD soon.

Meanwhile, go to the library and get the book. It's great read, along with all the other Kenneth Roberts historical novels..

Contact Warners through www.warnerarchive.com. At the bottom of the page is a "contact us" link to a form. One of the options in the drop down menu is "Warner Archive". Urge them to consider "Northwest Passage" as a Warner Archive release in the future. I believe this is our best hope and truly what Warner Archive was meant for: the release of a classic cult favorite that never saw a "traditional" dvd release. Now it could be produced "on demand" through Warner Archive.

I got a copy about three months ago from scootermovieshop. It cost $10. No frills, but good enough.
