Hitler had it Banned

Just watched the film on TCM - very good.

They made two interesting points:

- Germany is never mentioned (though Hitler is)

- Hitler had the film immediately banned

I remember reading somewhere that Hitler not only had the film banned, he placed the entire cast on a death list for when he took over America. Might be an urban legend but it gives the movie more power.

Germany is mentioned several times at the birthday party at the beginning, isn't it? Not to mention "Fatherland"

I am not sure who "they" is, but Germany is mentioned...several times.
The opening credits even say that the setting is a village in southern Germany.
The film, and all those produced by MGM, were banned eventually by Hitler.

Although "Germany" is mentioned many, many times, the word "Jews" isn't. I guess it was covered and all-inclusive by stating "non-Aryan".

For its time, a very brave and risky film, and one without a happy or hopeful ending - rare in those days.

Why do you care?
