Hard to believe--no comments about this classic?

I find it amazing that so many of these old classics are seemingly all but forgotten. This movie is a lot of fun--maybe even better than the very good Mask of Zorro. (There are quite a number of parallels between these two movies, not least of which is the introduction to the world at large of two of the most beautiful women ever to appear on screen: Linda Darnell, and Catherine Zeta-Jones [yes, they both had appeared in previous films, but these films made them household names].) I know, I know--it's in the dreaded black & white. Hey, get over it! We usually dream in B & W, so what's the big deal? Give this movie a chance and I'm sure most of you will enjoy. Cheerio!

Damn straight. I love this film and I'm prouud to say that it is perhaps the pinacle of my DVD collection, despite the lack of extras. The cast were all excellent, particularly Basil Rathbone of Sherlock Holmes fame, who did a fantastic job as Zorro's nemesis. Tyrone Power was also amazing as Zorro, injecting the character of Zorro with plenty of life. For such an old film the laughs come thick and fast with the inclusion of an elderly priest who aids Zorro in his tasks. For me this definitely ranks alongside Gene Kelly's The Three Musketeers as the greatest swash-buckling advenyures of all time. Check them out.

Hehe, I enjoyed this film very much, and have seen it more times than Mask of Zorro. The only thing I prefer really in Mask of is the epic fight scene where Alejando infiltrates Don thingy's hacienda to steal the papers, and has to fight his way through the guards on his way out, because it's so intense and the music is amazing :-D I've gotta watch that now..

But yes, this movie shouldn't be overlooked. I bought it on DVD for the same reason I bought Batman, the movie (967) - for a laugh. It had the same effect on me, too - they're two amazing films. Picked them up for £5.99, and they're worth every penny :)

I love this movie! Tyrone Power is fantastic! I like the older movies anyway and this one is definitely my favorite. I might me accused of heresy here, but I like this movie better than some John Wayne movies.

reply

No heresy. Wayne made quite a few crapola films (is THAT heresy?), and in fact I think perhaps only a handful can be said to be definitively better than this film.

I love this movie! It's one of my favorites. I like this better than any John Wayne film I've seen (and I've seen oodles). I would much rather see a Tyrone Power movie than a John Wayne movie. TP is number three on my favorite actors list, just behind James Stewart and Cary Grant.

I've always enjoyed watching this movie, unfortunately I haven't seen it in years. TV [at large] nowadays hardly ever runs classic movies or television programs anymore. I was about to order the DVD the other day when I saw that Fox was putting out a 'special edition', doesn't seem to be any new extras over the first set but it does have the color print of the film [which I know I saw on tv as often as the B&W print ran] so it'll be nice to have both versions available to watch.

Thankfully, there's Turner Classic Movies, lots of great classics to watch there. American Movie Classics used to be a good channel for classic movies too, now it seems they hardly ever show anything made before 1980. The Disney Channel used to be good for classic films too, until Eisner turned it into all 'modern' children's programming all the time. Not that they shouldn't show children's programming, it's nice to know that you can count on safe quality shows for kids, it's just kind of sad that the evening hours aren't filled classic movies and Disney material [movies and shows] anymore.

I'm surprised The Mark of Zorro has so few votes on IMDB. I thought this was a very popular classic film. Ace in the Hole, which has never been on video or DVD until now, actually has more votes than Zorro. Oh well, it's still a fantastic movie. Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone's duel in the end is more than enough reason to see this one (not to mention the stunning beauty, Linda Darnell).

i havent seen this one(the mark of zorro) but i watched a few videos on youtube.
and i agree with you both movies the mask of zorro and this one have a lot in commun including similar scenes and costumes

1st like you already pointed out CZJ and Linda Darnell beccame superstars with these movies.

2nd both movies have a very funny scene in a chapell
in that scene elena and Lolita talk to zorro without any idea they were talking to him

3rd the party and the dinner scene
A fisrt part of the scene all of them were in the table talikng and then elena and lolita go to dance with zorro (in both movies zorro pretending to be a Don.

B after their dancing both zorros(Tyrone power and Banderas ) make Lolita and elena get angry and the ladies for exactly the same reason

C elena and lolita were dressed in avery similar way just different color and the hair style was so similar

I loved this movie as a kid, watched it to death. Still love it beginning to end.

I remember flipping around the channels and I caught a piece of a movie that was a shot-for-shot remake...in color...looking like it was from the 70s. Anyone know which this was. Maybe frank Angela was in it?

I like imagining that The Mark of Zorro is the prequel or Part 1 of the Zorro story about Don Diego de la Vega. While The Mask of Zorro continues where The Mark of Zorro left off. I think they compliment each other.
