Best Movie About Life at Sea

Apart of John Ford's amazing run from 1939-1941, where he made Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, Drums Along the Mohawk, The Grapes of Wrath, The Long Voyage Home, Tobacco Road, and How Green Was My Valley.

Fantastic opening sequence. Almost reminds me of a Sergio Leone film. No words are spoken and the camera slowly and pacingly studies the faces and actions of the men. We feel a sense of isolation and loneliness.

The film contains many "John Ford moments." We have a fun drunken brawl, we have friendship and companionship, and most of all, it is a study of lost men. Men who take on the difficult life at sea because they don't feel wanted on land.

It's probably my favortie John Wayne film that isn't a western. He's so innocent and charming as the big Swede that you find yourself completely absorbed in the material near the film's end.
