Big hole in story

I enjoyed this movie, but there's a plot contrivance that is never resolved. Contrary to a user review on this site, Joan is not a socialite but rather the secretary to her fiance's mother. It's exposed that she had a former husband, Pete, who was such a crook that he faked his own death. She concocted a big story to avoid revealing her history, and that past is never mentioned again. They don't show it, but she had some 'splainin' to do.
