Great Opening...

No other film packs the punch of the opening sequence of "The Letter".

At least I can't remember any.

Also, kudos to 'Hop-Sing'.

It's still a great opening that packs a wallop, but the DVD debunks the myth that it's one continuous shot - a dissolve is evident when the camera pans over the roof of the hut where the workers sleep.

I was just thinking the same thing, but I find myself placing it as having nearly the same impact as the opening of Sunset Boulevard and probably some others that don't come immediately to mind.

Yes. The only other one I can think of, although it's much more protracted, is the opening scene of Citizen Kane.

It is one of the most beautifully photographed black and white films I've ever seen. The opening scene is a classic(the black and white cinematography is superb, capturing the shade and shadows beautifully in the many moonlit scenes). I especially liked the scene where Leslie tells her husband how much she still loves her vengefully slain adulterer.
