I am confused, why is it called "His Girl Friday" Hildy is NOT a girl Friday,she is a reporter, so I do not get it.

She was a reporter, but she was indispensible to him, not only a spouse, but she was the only talented reporter that he had on staff.
Without her, he would never be able to get the story
