Was Steinbeck a racist?


I read the book and then watched the movie. It seems like Steinbeck added paragraphs that freely mentioned the word *nagger* that had nothing to do with the storyline and added nothing to the plot. There was a part where Al mentioned that he knew a girl (white) who delivered a black baby. It had nothing to do with the story line at all.

Steinbeck was actually accused of that for his novel Tortilla Flat which was about a group of “paisanos” of Mexican-Indian-Spanish-Caucasian descent. It bothered him because he was actually fond of those people.
