The Ghostbreakers Movie 1940:

I was watching this movie The Ghostbreakers just this last weekend and I enjoyed it very much. The best time to watch this movie I find is after 12 midnight with the lights turned down low or off to get the full effect of this movie. Filmed in glorious B/W adds to the excitement of the movie.

Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard were strong characters as well as Willie Best (Alex)my favorite, played their roles as well as the other actors very well and with feeling like you were with them in the castle.I know this movie did leave an effect on me after watching it.

I would recommend this movie to any film buff. This goes nicely with Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)Another well acted B/W comedy. Both movies adds excitement as well as adventure and won't put you to sleep.

Their was a sequel called Scared Stiff Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis (1956) but it wasn't as good and their was too much musical numbers by the 2 actors and not enough comedy takes. I had that movie but I sold it.
You can't beat the original.
That is all I have to say about this movie. I will probably watch it again soon and alone to re discover those Goof scenes.

This film has one of my favorite Bob Hope political gags: In the foggy atmosphere, the creepy stranger ominously warns Hope and his girl of the zombies, the undead, who follow blindly, "neither knowing or caring what they do" ...

"Like Democrats?" quips Hope.

reply

I like it even with the Democrat remark. When I first saw it, I thought "Republicans" and then he said "Democrats" and I just fell over laughing. Pot meet kettle!

reply

It certainly is a quality film of the time.

He makes much the same gag in the Cat and the Canary.

Do you believe people come back from the dead? You mean like Republicans?

"I was playing the RIGHT notes...just not necessarily in the right order"

I love the Democrats line too, but I wonder about the context. In 1940 was that really a guaranteed laugh-getter?

reply

Yes, but these days it isn't as funny because it is so true.

The way the zombies "follow blindly, neither knowing or caring what they do" does sound like the current Bush administration!! If that does not sound like Cheney and company I don't know who does! LOL!!

I think that most of Hollywood were Republicans at that time. Not like now when most are Democrats. Irene Dunne and Ginger Rogers have said they were republicans. And I assume Bob Hope was one because of that crack he made in the movie. Great line! Although I do feel that it does say something for people voting for Obama just because Oprah tells them to. I'm not saying anything bad about Barack but I like when people make up their own minds and vote for him because they feel he is worthy of being president and not because Oprah tells them to.

Bob Hope was a staunch republican all his career, as far as I know. 1940 would have been the middle of the FDR administration, so the context would seem likely to be there for an anti-democrat joke from a republican advocate.

This is one of the best horror/comedy films ever made.Right up there with Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.

Don't forget Hold That Ghost from Abbott & Costello, which is even better.👻

Airing on TCM right now, though I have the DVD too.📀
