What ever happened to the portrait that was at the bottom of the stairs?

The one with Paulettes characters look a like ancestor in the black dress. I remember seeing it in a tv show back in the 70's (Mc Millan and Wife???)with a different face and blonde hair but it was unmistakably the same painting.

The common practice was to have paintings done up in oils except for the face, which could be added with water-soluble paints, so that the canvas could be used more than once. The prop-master just picked a painting with an appropriate overall look and had the face added for the show it was needed in, and then cleaned after use. There is no telling for sure what happened to the actual prop, most were sold off or destroyed in later years.

Paulette Godard was a guest 'victim' in the pilot film for the NBC Mystery Movie series, the Snoop Sisters, the Female Instinct (1972).

Scenes from Ghost Breakers were used in that. Possibly what you may remember.

The Ghost Breakers was re made in 1955 into a Martin and Lewis movie called Scared Stiff. Lizabeth Scott played the Goddard part, and she was a blonde. I imagine they repainted the portrait for that movie, and that's the painting you saw.

Just a guess...
