Did Bob Hope really hate all Democrats?

One of his lines has him comparing the Democratic party to Zombies. Far-right radicals love using this quote as proof of how much they hate all Democrats, ignoring the fact that there are conservative Democrats, just as much as there are liberal Republicans.

Here's a link to Bob Hope using the same line, about Republicans:

I can't vouch for it, but, one reply to the clip says that it's from The Cat and the Canary, which was made the year before The Ghost Breakers.

If you know history, you know that the lines from the 2 movies are totally different, saying different things about the Republican & Democratic parties, & that both have everything to do with what was happening in the political sphere at the time each movie was being made:

In "The Cat and the Canary" (1939), a lady asks Hope if he believes it possible that people can come back from the dead, & he responds, "You mean like the Republicans?"

The line is a direct reference to the U.S. House & Senate elecions of 1938, when Republicans gained 81 seats in the House (as well as a few in the Senate), after having been dominated by the Democrats--to the point of literal ridiculousness--since 1932.

In "The Ghost Breakers" (1940), on the other hand, when another character describes Zombies as having "no will of [their] own," and "walking around blindly with dead eyes, following orders, not knowing what they do, not caring," Hope again notes the similarity to contemporary events LOL: "You mean like Democrats?"

Again, if you know history, you know it's an allusion to Democrats of his day blindly, mindlessly (in Hope's opinion, I guess-Haha!) following their hero FDR into the 1940 elections, in spite of that year being the 10th year of the Great Depression--the 8th year of terrible Depression under Roosevelt & the New Deal.

Then I wouldn't be surprised if...

1) Bob Hope celebrated the death of FDR.

2) Bob Hope called Lee Harvey Oswald "a hero" for killing President Kennedy.

reply

That seems a bit of a stretch. One can disagree with a politician without rejoicing at their death.

I think Bob Hope was equal opportunity in his jokes like this and I did not detect anything vicious in his humor. He enabled us to laugh at ourselves and the "comedians" of today could learn from him. So many of the "jokes" today are so vicious as to be very distasteful to me. BYW for every joke of any kind about Democrats there are about twenty about Republicans and with the jokes about Republican the "comedians" don't try to hide their contempt and hostility toward Republicans. Bob Hope entertained Presidents of both parties and his jokes were even handed and not vicious. C'mon, lighten up! Sometimes we need a good laugh without being embarrassed.

There was a time, when the attitude was that people of different political parties could agree to disagree and respect each other-- and people of this country were encouraged to recognize their commonality. When politicians didn't suggest jailing or asassinating their opponents. Back then, political jokes could be good-natured joshing, rather than hateful.

So Bob Hope could be a Republican and not hate Democrats.

Seems so long ago, but it was in my lifetime.

I don't know where you get that. I've read a couple of his books and he never even suggested any animosity towards FDR or JFK. He joked about republicans and democrats alike, but it was never baseless or mean-spirited like so many are today. Roosevelt and Kennedy both invited him to the White House regularly, and genuinely enjoyed his company. ...and how does finding a joke in an old movie funny make people "far right radicals?" Do you know what radicals are?

"I’ve known eleven presidents about as intimately as a man can without being either a fellow politician or related. I’ve golfed with them, dined with them, told jokes with them. I’ve even had them steal my material. Laughter is nonpartisan—a great leveler. And maybe that’s the one thing all eleven presidents have in common. As long as it’s funny, you can say almost anything to them and get away with it." —Bob Hope, 1996

He also makes a very funny quip about Republicans early in Road to Morocco. Not out of contempt. It's just a funny joke.

He makes the wise crack about Republicans in The Cat and the Canary. He also makes a really funny quip about Republicans in Road to Morocco.

Let me know when you run across a conservative Democrat. I haven't seen one since 1965, not one involved in national politics anyway.

Jesus H. Christ, it was a fucking joke. Lighten up.

I don't see many conservative Democrats at this point. The radical left has taken over the whole party. Gabbard is one of the few sensible ones and she won't be a Democrat for much longer.
I don't think what Hope said is 'hatred'. I also don't know if it is accurate. Zombies are mindless and so are Democrats but most zombies are slow. Democrats today are fast. They riot and loot and tear down statues with the kind of speed and efficiency that is the envy of the Middle East.
If a black person is shot and killed, Democrats will immediately start protesting, no matter the circumstances. I guess they are more like the zombies in 28 Days Later.
How mindless are Democrats? More than TWICE the number of black people killed in the whole country last year by police were killed in Chicago by other black non-police. Not only that, the overwhelming number of people killed by police last year were not black. Most were white.
Further proof Democrats are mindless? Two young black teens were murdered recently in Ohio and the Dems didn't even recognize either of them, instead fixating on the knife-wielding girl who was shot by a cop. I think most sensible people agree the cop did the right thing, the only thing.
Even more proof Democrats are mindless? They seem to want to sell the rest of us that knife fights are a casual part of growing up.
Yeah, Democrats really are zombies.
