weakest segment

all these segments are better then the fantasia 2000. no doubt. but what would you say is the worst segment here.

not counting the stuff in the beginning or the stuff right after the intermission, the really abstract stuff. for me the very first segment is the worst. the nutcracker suit. the song is nice and the animation is okay but compared to the rite of spring or Bald mountain or the thing with the hippo's. that one seemed the least inspired.
what do you think.

I think song wise I am going to have to say Dance of the Hours. It is okay when it is animated, but the song is boring.

"The Rite of Spring". As beautiful as Stravinsky's music is, the piece feels drawn out after a while. It's still a deserving and commendable segment but it's not a favorite.

reply

Agreed. Rite Of Spring is my least favorite segment. Visually it's stunning and I love how those scenes are recreated with animatronics in The Universe of Energy at EPCOT, but it's very drawn out and tiresome to watch.

The Dance of the Hours was composed for Ponchielli's opera "La Gioconda." It is a ballet. If you want a version that is not boring, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aZcii9jwEw&list=FLUfhuCIwJu0UA-dnrNx0cDw&index=1
You won't think of hippos and ostriches the next time you hear the music.

The second movement of the Pastoral is the weakest part of the whole movie.

I agree, Blackjack254. I thought that the Pastoral, generally, was the weakest part of the original film, Fantasia. It was too cutesy, and sort of detracted from most of the rest of the film, which was much firmer, and discussed more serious stuff, if one gets the drift.

reply

When I was growing up with this film, the Dance of the Hours was always my least favorite segment. Having grown up, I feel even more so now. It just doesn't seem to have that same epic and artistic feel to it the rest of the pieces do. I'm talking about the animation side mostly, of course, the music is fine.

The kitschy travesty of Beethoven's 6th and the anti-climactic Ave Maria (never cared for that tune).

Pastoral Symphony. Not a lot of things happen in the first part. I never liked the animation and the mix of pastel colours. The whole romance between those male centaurs and the centaurettes who wear excessive make-up is just way too sugary. I like some parts, like the pegassus family. I just think the segment as a whole is more suitable for bronies.

reply

I would definitely say that the Dance of the Hours segment was the weakest. I feel like all of the segments before and after it had a very epic feel to them. While I think Dance of the Hours is great, it is not quite on the same level of the other segments (both musically and story-wise).

reply

I'd have to say Ave Maria. It's fine for what it is, but compared to the rest it doesn't hold a candle (no pun intended).

This thread demonstrates the diversity of our personalities and tastes in music. For me, the Pastoral Symphony and the Ave Maria finale packed an emotional wallop. I found lots of merit in all of the episodes. My only real fault-finding is that I thought the tempo of the second movement of the Pastoral was too slow. It would be interesting to speed it up by 25% while keeping the pitch the same in audio-editing software, and see whether or not it becomes too frantic visually.
