Another Great Old Movie

At 71, I can't believe all the movies I've never seen - especially when I can see all my old "friends" - Bressart, Veidt, Taylor and Bonita!! Oh that ending -- wow. Thank God for TCM! TGFTCM! Hey- I just coined a new whatever you call it :-) I can imagine my Mom and Dad watching it at the Dreamland Theatre on Grand Av. in New Haven CT. Its gone -but I'll always remember watching movies there.

Awww, such a nice post. What you have coined is a new acronym -- and a very good one, at that. I plan to use it, so thanks!

I only caught about 10 minutes of this a few weeks ago, and burst into tears when Taylor's character reads the 'last' note of his mom's.(*) He was so great an actor, when given the right script/story, ASIDE from being breathtakingly gorgeous. I have seen quite a # of his films, and there is always something I really like in any one of his performances. Of course I want to see this movie in full now, after seeing that one scene. *I think it was especially poignant considering the relationship that Taylor and his mother had in real life. I cried as much as he did, knowing this fact. It made the scene seem extremely personal when taking that fact into consideration. So, I believe that that scene with the letter made for a very honest reaction on Taylor's part.

Ah yes, Bonita Granville. About 8 years ago, TCM showed (her in) her first film ("Westward Passage"), from 1932, also starring a 25 (!!!) year old Laurence Olivier.

I was (and still am) captivated by their beauty. Great stuff, these classic films!!

I agree...very nice post! I can't believe that I've never seen this one either...until just now. Thanks to our friends at TCM...that is. I couldn't move...it really kept me until the very end. Good movie... great actors...and happy ending. Well, I'd like to think that the Countess was able to go back to America and yes, meet up with Mark...somewhere on 57th Street.
