Are you serious or just trolling? The screenplay deserved more than the nomination, and the film deserved much more if it weren't for the norms of the time.

I diagree. This movie was fascinating in many ways. A really well done biography like they don't make any more.

Definitely have to join you in disagreeing with the OP; I caught this film a few evenings ago on TCM and was very
pleased and impressed with it. It gave us an earnest, moving, intellectually stimulating representation of a man
whose quiet, steadfast determination, decency and dedication saved countless thousands of lives and revolution-
ized the field of medicine. It created a palpable window into a genius mind and allowed us to fully appreciate
and grasp the creative spark and inspiration of a true unsung hero; that the film took what could have been dry
and uneventful material by the usual cinema standards and made it riveting and stimulating is a testament to how
effective the screenplay really was. The film is also graced by a superbly understated performance by the great
Edward G. Robinson; I've grown used to his larger than life, explosive roles and his restrained work here was a
pleasant surprise - truly one of our finest screen talents, and the fact that he was never nominated for a
competitive Oscar is proof positive that the people who vote on the Academy Awards are deranged. All the same,
come February 26 Sunday evening, I'll be dutifully tuning in....
