Has anyone gotten the DVD for this?

Is it any good with special features?

How is the film quality?

I just now bought this (Dollar dvds). That and 'The Bat' with Vincent Price. I think I may just give it to someone, may watch it first. It has no special features listed. Digitial mastered...is all.

I got the same thing. I also have an extra copy of "Devil Bat" on a collection of 20 old horror movies.

Mine was put out by Platinum Disc Corp. and is part of a 2-disc pack with Vincent Price's "House On Haunted Hill". The special features are scant (a trivia section and a short bio on Lugosi), but the quality of the film itself is pretty good.

The two best DVD versions of this that I've seen are the colorized version put out by Legend Films and the Lugosi Collection disc.

The latter is authorized by the Lugosi Estate and features a commentary track by Bela Lugosi Jr. The print is probably the best you're going to see of this public domain film. It probably never looked that good to begin with, particularly since it was put out by a poverty-row studio and they most likely used a cheap film stock.

The Legend Films disc uses 21st Century computer technology to add color to public domain films and the results they achieve are often astonishing. They recently teamed with Ray Harryhausen to produce a colorized version of 20,000,000 Miles to Earth with his full approval and participation. The Blu-Ray edition is spectacular that my roommates could not believe that it wasn't filmed in color.

But I digress...my point is that Legend Film is not your grandma's colorization and it light years beyond Ted Turner and his crayons, ransacking the classics. Legend Films actually puts thought and effort into their colorizations and the results are astonishing. The only flaw to be found is that -because of the stigma attached to colorization- they are forced to use lower-quality public domain prints, which hinders their efforts.

However, since being contracted to provide colorization and effects work for Martin Scorcese on The Aviator -and his having praised their work, and being championed by Ray Harryhousen, Legend Films has been given greater access to better prints.

I would agree with you, but having seen a large number of their colorized features -and comparing them with the old Ted Turner travesties- the difference is night-and-day.

Try to catch their colorized version of 20,000,000 Miles to Earth and you'll see what colorization can be when given full access and with the participation of the film-maker.
