First of all, who would believe a guy with this accent is really named "Doctor Carruthers"? Secondly, just what kind of doctor is he? The foreword mentions that he is beloved by the whole town. But he seems to be a perfume developer primarily, rather than a G.P. And of course, there's the business with the bats! So we have a combination of kindly family doctor/scent specialist/bat breeder/mad scientist. Wonder what school he learned THAT from!

Maybe Carruthers fled Europe before the war broke out and changed his name to Carruthers when he arrived in America? Maybe his mother was from Transylvania and his father from America, but his father died when he was young, and he learned English from his mother who had a Transylvanian accent?
In THE APE MAN, Lugosi's character is "James Brewster." In VOODOO MAN, he is "Dr. Richard Marlowe." I have a feeling the screenwriters were ribbing the audience with such white-bread names.

Who wouldn't have loved him? It was only 9 years since the film "Dracula," and Dr. Car utters looks just like the Count! :p
