I think that it is cool that....

even though the only flying experience that we know Buck has is flying an airship he can also fly numerous space ships!

I like how a 500 year old man is made the #1 hero guy 5 minutes after waking up. Would we put a guiy from the year 1500 in charge of anything?

I suppose it was saying that a 20th century man was more rough and tumble than a 25th century one. That men had become soft and didn't know how to fight anymore. But they should have stated that.

A Sea Captain from 500 years ago would be of comparable training and skill to Buck Rogers scenario.
He would be rougher and tougher than most men now and also have a good useful skill package to build on.
He would still be on his ship and we would have access to the ships papers. There would also be a chance we could find other corroborating documents. He would be unique in his expertise and methods pertaining to leadership, navigation, and cargo management, as well as some less obvious talents of this profession.
He would be of great benefit filling in some historical blanks and misconceptions.
If he were thrown into an emergency situation where those talents would be useful, it could happen.

OK, but putting a 500 year old guy you just meet and know nothing about into a secret mission for the salvation of planet Earth seems a bit much.

I don't care how tough a 500-year-old guy is! I don't put him in charge of anything until he learns about electricity, indoor plumbing, radio, television, personal computers, landline and cellular telephones, underwear, toothbrushing, toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant, nail trimming, eating with utensils, et al.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
