Those muddy streets.....

Does anyone know if the street scene (where Spencer Tracy drives a car, stops, and converses with Clark Gable in a second-floor window) is part of a real town or a studio lot?

I ask because there was about a foot of mud covering the entire street in that scene. I know that's how it was but I just want to know where that scene was shot.

I was wondering that too. Also the whole well fire scene. This movie looked expensive to make.

It's not just mud... if it was 'authentic', it would be mixed with horse droppings and heaven knows what else.

TCM just aired Boom Town again as part of their Friday's in April salute to special effects before CGI....The topic of all the mud used in the oil fields came up and it turns out it was mostly OATMEAL used to simulate all the muck...

In a way oatmeal might be cleaner than mud, but if the stuff ever starts to spoil or go rancid, the smell would be awful. Real dirt and water might be easier to deal with in the long run. I'l bet thats what they used, probably filmed in a back lot at MGM, left over from some western.
