Lugosi character question (spoiler)

We just watched this and neither my husband or I could figure this out. What did Bela Lugosi's character in this movie die from? Our only theory is that he was claustrophobic and getting locked in the closet gave him a heart attack. Was our version missing something? Does anyone else have ideas?

i think that it must have suffocation
he was yelling out amidst the screams of the girl that "there's no air!"

I think that after killing his girlfriend, Cannon let Marnay out and killed him like he did the other three gang members.

He died from suffocation.

yep, suffocated. In the trailer of the movie, the narrator says "...as Lugosi actually experienced the terror of suffocating to death in a closet..."

I remember watching a mini documentry about Lagosi and they mention this scene and they had said something about suffocation. I agree with it as well.
